Deebo Samuel injury update: 49ers star carted off the field after suffering gruesome knee injury vs. Buccaneers
The good vibes from Brock Purdy’s impressive showcase vs. the Bucs summarily evaporated when San Francisco’s star wideout Deebo Samuel went down clutching his left leg in the second quarter.
Samuel crumbled to the turf after getting caught up in the crunch of a Rakeem Nunez-Roches tackle. Samuel’s left foot appeared to get caught in the grass as he felt the contact, bending awkwardly as he went to the ground.
Samuel lost the ball on the exchange, which was scooped up by Bucs’ Lavonte David. The All-Pro pass-catcher immediately grabbed for his left leg and stayed on the ground for some time as Niners’ medical personnel streamed onto the field.

Samuel was eventually carted off the field, tears flooding down his face as he drifted into toward the tunnel. 49ers fans serenaded him with “Deebo” chants as he left.

According to Jordan Schultz, Samuel will escape serious injury.
Early indications are that #49ers WR Deebo Samuel did not suffer a serious injury, sources tell @theScore. I’m told the First-Team All-Pro WR badly twisted his ankle, but the team is optimistic he’s okay. Deebo will undergo more tests as a precaution.

In a side fraught with absences, a potential spell on the sideline for Samuel could loom largest for the Niners. He’s not quite on the trajectory of his mammoth 2021 season, when he cemented himself as perhaps the NFL’s most dangerous player. However, his proclivity in both the pass and run game still proved vital, particularly for a San Francisco team that has started not one, not two, but three different quarterbacks at times this year.
Samuel left Sunday’s game with 42 total yards — 21 by way of catch, 21 by way of run. He opened the Niners’ scoring with a 13-yard scamper in the first quarter, as well.
49ers WR depth chart
For all the concerns about Samuel’s health, the 49ers aren’t exactly lacking in wide receiver depth. Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings and Ray-Ray McCloud still present a formidable force in the pass game.
None of those players, though, offer the versatility of Samuel, a player noted for his ability in both the pass and run game. Perhaps the Niners will dive more into the well of Christian McCaffrey touches in an effort to replicate the production lost in Samuel’s absence.
